Mud for sale

And, in continuing with the spirit of my “It can only happen on Ebay” entries..

Someone is selling Glastonbury mud. (Glastonbury is a five day mega-rock music festival in the UK, which is a must-go for rock fans, music revellers and people looking for a lay alike). That’s right – mud. As in, soggy soil mixed with water. M-U-D.

Better still, someone has bid £510 for it. Quick, with one day to go, you’re still well in the running to bid.

Mothers

A few months ago, one of our secretaries, a lovely lady of almost sixty, related to me how crushed she felt when her eldest son decided not to invite her or her husband to their wedding – but evidently invited the parents of his wife-to-be. I sat in stony silence listening to her telling her story – pretending as if she didn’t care, but seeing tears welling up in her eyes as she spoke.

Today, I was in her office when she wrote a card for that very son’s birthday, which happened to be tommorow. She signed it ‘Love Mum’ and signed him a cheque for £50 as a birthday gift. He will be turning either 35 or 36. As she excitedly put the card in, telling me how much fun she had choosing a card she knew he’d like, I said to myself: Now, that’s mothers for you. They never run out of love.

Dutch Auctions

I was bidding for an optical mouse on Ebay, when I saw one manufactured by Dell going for £5.99. Being as it was a Dutch auction, and there were at least 20 units, I made a bid for the starting price.

Looking at the list of winners, I noticed that some smart guy actually bid £12 for the item – where as he only needed to bid £5.99 to get hold of the piece. His nickname? birdbrain45. How apt.

Lucky for him, the way Dutch auctions work is that all winners need only pay the lowest bid made for the item. And to give fair credit to the guy, perhaps he was just playing it safe – in case in the end, there are more bids then there are items.
